Taylor Varrato MCB Sec. 7 30 November 2015 Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People I will never forget my first MCB lecture. A large syllabus was presented, one that seemed to be jam packed with deadlines, reading assignments, quizzes, and to my surprise extra credit assignments. Upon hearing that one of the extra credit assignments consisted of reading a book published in 1937, I was not too thrilled. However, after skimming through the first few pages of How to Win Friends and Influence People, I became instantly intrigued and skimming turned into close reading. I have never been one to read, or for that matter, one to be glued to a book, but this book really spoke to me. You see, I am currently going to school to become†¦show more content†¦Of course I never meant any harm, but there have been several periods of time when she has resented me for it. Not only have I made others resent me at times, but I have resented others for being criticized. Just recently, I received a B- on an English pa per that I put hours into. Obviously, I am not the best writer, but I put a lot of work into that paper and consulted with the professor multiple times before handing it in. Now, I understand that constructive criticism is necessary in order to enhance one’s writing skills, but the professor had absolutely nothing good to say about my writing. This made me resent class, resent seeing her, resent doing reading assignments, and above all resent writing. The key word here is resent. Carnegie sums this up well by saying, â€Å"Criticism is dangerous, because it wounds a person s precious pride, hurts his sense of importance, and arouses resentment† (23). This ties together two points, the emphasis on one’s sense of importance and resentment. Going off of this idea of criticism, I like how Carnegie touched upon it later in the book. Another principle of his is: Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person. This is such a key principle because, a s stated above, criticism is necessary in some cases. The hard part about criticism is that it can invoke feelings of resentment. McGwire Essay Hes 65, and roughly 250lbs, and for the most part he is about as average as you or me.Almost except for one major thing, he is the record holder of the most prestigious record in all of pro sports. His name is Mark McGwire and the record is his 70 homeruns, shattering the old record held by the Minnesota native named Roger Maris. On the Major League Baseballs final day of the season Mark McGwire hit two mammoth homeruns to give him 70 on the year, an astonishing 1 home run in every 7.3 at bats. Mark started this quest for the record early in spring training, setting his mind on accomplishing this one goal to be the king of all homerun hitters. On the first day of the season Mark hit his first homerun of the season. On a 1 ball no strike count in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs and the basses loaded Mark hit a Grand slam off of The LA Dodgers pitcher Ramon Martinez. With that Grand Slam he became just the twenty-first player in Major League history to hit a grand slam in the season opener. Now the quest was on, he was now 61 homeruns from beating the record. Overall Mark hit eleven homeruns in the seasons first twenty-seven games, Mark really turned it on in the month of May. In his next twenty-five games in the month of May, Mark hit sixteen homeruns giving him twenty-seven homeruns so far. With his sixteen homeruns in May, McGwire tied Mickey Mantle for the most homeruns in May.Then, out of nowhere a familiar enemy of Marks shows its ugly head, Mark misses three games with back spasms, injuries are something that has plagued him most of his career. On June 5th Mark is now healthy and ready to play, In the first inning Mark came to the plate with a runner at second and one out. Mark lines the 1 ball 2-strike pitch into the Centerfield Bleachers at Busch stadium.On June 18th Mark sets a Major league Record with his thirty-three homeruns, giving him the most homeruns before July 1st in any season. Mark was now becoming the biggest draw all around the majors, teams who normally couldnt give tickets away were now selling out there stadiums when Mark came to town. The Minnesota Twins couldnt get 50,000 total people to show up for three games, and now for the three games Mark was in tow they drew over 150,000 people. Everyone was swarming to ballparks all around the league to get a chance to see Mark hit a homerun. Mark was on a tear but now he was not the only chasing the record. Sammy Sosa for the Chicago Cubs was on a tear hitting twenty homeruns in July to get him close to McGwire in the Homerun race. Now the race was on Sosa and McGwire were now playing a game of cat and mouse as Sosa tried desperately to catch McGwire. On August 19th Sammy finally catches and passes McGwire hitting his forty-eighth homer of the year. However Sammys lead was short lived Mark not only tied Sammy in the eighth inning against the Cubs but he takes the lead in the tenth inning of the same game. Mark was back in control of the homerun race. This would go on for the next month or so, Sosa would take the lead and McGwire would come back on the same day and reclaim the lead. On August 22nd Mark sets another record when he hits his 162nd homerun in the last three seasons beating Babe Ruths record of 161. On September 5th Mark finally hits his 60th homerun of the year joining Maris and Ruth as the only players in League history to hit sixty or more homeruns. Now the Stage was set the Cubs and Sammy Sosa came to town for a three game series with the Cardinals in St. Louis. In the Stands there were some very important fans, Roger Maris family came to watch Mark beat their fathers record. On September 7th Mark stepped up to the plate in the first inning, Mike Morgan of the Chicago Cubs was on the mound he had retired the first two Cardinal hitters and now he had to pitch to McGwire. The first pitch Morgan throws to McGwire is in there for a strike; the next pitch was just outside for a ball. With the crowd on their feet cheering Morgan threw the 1-1 pitch, CRACK, Mark crushed the pitch into the centerfield stands hitting the ball 430. Mark had now tied Roger Maris record and he still had eighteen games to hit just one more homerun to set the record. On September eighth, in the forth inning facing Steve Trachsel of the Cubs; Mark came to the plate once more. Trachsel threw a pitch to McGwire; Mark hit a deep line drive into left field. The ball was hit deep but everyone including Mark thought the ball wasnt going to leave the park, but then it was gone just clearing the wall. Nam June Paik Nam June Paik was born in Seoul, Korea on July 20, 1932. He was the fifth and youngest child of a textile merchant. In 1947, at the age of 14, he studied piano and composition with two of Korea's foremost composers. The family moved to Tokyo, Japan in 1950 to avoid the havoc of the Korean War. Paik studied music, history, art history, and philosophy at the University of Tokyo from 1953 to 1956. He did his graduate dissertation on Schoenberg. In 1956, he moved to Germany to pursue his interest in avant-garde music. He studied music history under Thrasybulos Georgiades at the University of Munich and composition under Wolfgang Fortner at the Hochschule fr Musik. He also attended classes under Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luigi Nono, David Tudor, and John Cage. Paik lived in Cologne for the next five years and then returned to Japan for a short time to conduct experiments with electromagnets and color TV sets. In 1964, Paik moved to New York and still resides there today. While he lived in Korea, Paik had become familiar with the work of Schoenberg. Paik was interested in Schoenberg above all others because of his radical compositions. They reflected the social atmosphere of Seoul at the time. In 1947, Paik had only one piece of Schoenberg's work. It took Paik two years to convince a record shop owner to let him listen to what was probably the only Schoenberg record in Korea. Paik had only two compositions by which to judge his "guru." Then one day in Japan, in 1951, Paik heard a third piece on NHK Radio. Another of Paik's great influences was John Cage, whom he met in Germany. Meeting Cage, a student of Schoenberg, was a turning point in Paik's life. Paik's piece Zen for Film was definitely influenced by Cage's 4' 33", the silent piece. Cage was devoted to sounds, but Paik was devoted to objects, yet Cage's influence is evident in all of Paik's work. Joseph Beuys, like Cage, played an important role in influencing the direction of Paik's video work. Paik's portraits of Beuys constitute a significant body of work. They are more than a homage to Beuys, they are an affirmation of video as a new sensorium that expands the fleeting image on the television. As Paik's education was furthered, he became a key in Fluxus art. In 1961, he met Fluxus founder George Maciunas, which began his participation in Fluxus concerts. The visual characteristics of Paik's concerts gained significance equal to that of the music with his one man show Exposition of Music?Electronic Television in 1963. It included the skull of an ox, 13 pianos, 13 television sets, a mannequin, and several sound producing objects. Upon his return to Japan in 1963, he found that he could manipulate the television screens with magnets. He began to conduct experiments with the help of an electronics engineer, Shuya Abe. These experiments were the groundwork for Participation TV, an active viewer piece. Abe also assisted Paik in the production of Robot K-456. In 1965, Paik bought one of the first Sony video recorders sold and began to create video art. Works such as Zen for Film and Global Groove were the results of Paik's newfound medium. In 1970, Paik and Abe invented a video synthesizer, which made it possible to manipulate colors, shapes, and movement sequences on videotapes and television programs. Paik has been given the title of "Father of Video Art," as he was the first to use video and television as a viable medium. The Opera Sextronique was one of Paik's "happenings" with Charlotte Moorman, the cellist. It included Moorman wearing a battery powered bra with televisions covering her nipples, and the Young Penis Symphony, consisting ten young men sticking their penises through a paper curtain in time to the music. Opera Sextronique was one of Paik's attempts to integrate sex into his work. Paik once told Manfred Eichel that "The five principles of media are: Sex, Violence, Greed, Vanity and Deception." Paik used these principles heavily in his earliest works, thus the concept of the Opera Sextronique. In the Opera for one act, Moorman was to perform topless; however the performance was interrupted by police, and resulted in the arrest of Moorman and Paik. The resulting trial was a damper on his"sex into musical performance" campaign. Global Groove is a video piece with surreal visuals and neo-Dada ideas. Paik manipulates multicultural elements, art-world figures, and pop iconography. He appropriates Pepsi commercials and integrates them with images of contemporary performers
